Google has announced longer snippets in the SERPs. This move was made to help better understand the context of a search result when dealing with longer search phrases.

To give context to the search results for a typical search, Google provides both a dark blue title and a snippet from the page. The snippet displays text from page and bolds the text that deals with your search. This allows you to see how the words in your query appear on the page.

In some cases, specifically when you use a longer search phrase, the words may not appear near each other on the page. As a result, the old way of displaying the SERPs may not provide enough context to understand how the website relates to your query. To improve the results and provide searchers with more information about the websites that have been found, Google has expanded the snippet to reveal more words from the page. Below is an example.
