There is no marketing strategy that is safe from real world competition. It is a critical mistake to underestimate the power of your competitors. If you think that there’s no advantage to getting to know your competitors, think again! The best way to beat your competition at marketing the goods or services you offer is by getting to know them.

A good way to start getting acquainted is to inquire with your customers about their experiences. Also check with your sales staff to find out what the competition is doing to close the sales your staff misses. Try to narrow your results down to no more than three or four of your top competitors.

Make use of the Internet to find out everything you can about the top competition. Do they sell the exact same products? Are they canvassing the territory in the same manner as your sales staff? What are they doing to get the sales instead of you? This involves finding out about price, quality and service they offer. The rewards you’ll reap by getting to know the competition is building your own competitive edge that gives your sales the advantage.
